Make and mend during a weekend of free workshops

Make and mend in celebration of innovative manufacturing and creative technical design at London's Southbank Centre this weekend (13 - 14 August). Curated by Jing Lu of Black Country Atelier, the Southbank Centre will be a hive of activity hosting free workshops dedicated to the idea of 'power and production'.

Whether you decide to learn the electric art of soldering with John Richards of Dirty Electronics, go under the bonnet with the AA for hands-on advice on basic car repairs and maintenance or create your own app with textextext, there are workshops to inspire all the family.

A panel discussion exploring the future of production and manufacturing will be chaired by Evan Davies, presenter of the BBC's Made in Britain series, on Saturday evening, after which, if you've still got the energy, there will be a cycle-in-cinema, hosted by Magnificent Revolution, screening Peter Sellar's I'm Alright Jack, powered only by the team effort of cycling members of the audience.

Our culture of convenience has fostered the idea of replacing rather than repairing, and this weekend is all about reclaiming, reconnecting and creating a vision of the factory floor of the future.
