Better known for songs like Fuck Tha Police and starring roles in the films Anaconda and Boyz n the Hood, Ice Cube reveals himself to be an architecture buff in the latest video made by Pacific Standard Time.

Pacific Standard Time: Art in L.A. 1945 – 1980 is a collaboration of more than 60 cultural institutions across Southern California, coming together for six months (until April 2012) to tell the story of the birth of the Los Angeles art scene.

In the latest video, Cube is filmed walking through Charles and Ray Eames’s Case Study #8 House in LA throwing out choice lines such as: “It’s not about the pieces it’s how the pieces work together”, “They was doing mash ups before mash ups even existed”, and "This is going green 1949 style, bitch! Believe that!"

Ice Cube has actually long been passionate about architecture and studied architectural drafting at the Phoenix Institute of Technology in 1987, around the time when he recorded his first demos with the gangsta rap pioneers NWA.

“When NWA was first about to pop off I wasn’t sure if I was gonna make a living [from music],” he told the New York Times. “Cussin’ on the radio? I didn’t know if that was gonna bring me any money, so I ended up going to school in Phoenix and spending a year out there.

“I had learned about them when I was studying drafting. Back then, I didn’t know I was going to make money. So being that they put together a house in two days and used discarded materials — something about their style caught on.

“In Los Angeles, you see a lot of McMansions, where the house takes all the land. Here, it seemed they built this thing inside of a park. It kept the serene, quaint feel. Anybody could go there and collect their thoughts.” Asked how his drafting skills are these days Cube replied: “You don’t want to live in nothing I draw.”
