Has anything good come out of Covid-19? Ann Treneman certainly thinks so. Treneman, a prominent journalist at the Times newspaper in Great Britain believes that, thanks to the lockdown, “the nation’s gardens have never looked tidier”.

And when it comes to neat, tidy guidance and green-fingered insight, Treneman has singled out one book from this year’s crop of titles that has truly borne fruit. Aaron Bertelsen’s Grow Fruit & Vegetables in Pots is The Times’ Gardening Book of 2020.

“This beautiful book is the perfect antidote to a pandemic year,” writes Treneman. “A compendium of advice, both inspirational and practical, on how to grow fruit and veg on your balcony, back step or, indeed, just about anywhere.”

Of course, Treneman knows that Bertelsen’s own pots don’t just sit anywhere. As the vegetable gardener and cook at the acclaimed country house Great Dixter in East Sussex, south-east England, he has some of the best land in Europe at his disposal. However, this singular new title focuses on the way he transformed the kitchen courtyard into a container garden, and, in so doing, gathered together a wealth of tips and advice to take readers from pot to plate, wherever they sow their seeds. “The guidance is to the point, the photographs sumptuous and the recipes towards the end are the icing on the (gooseberry) cake,” Treneman concludes.
